Familiar Forms

My work is heavily influenced stylistically by work from movements cemented as art canon such as Cubism, Futurism, and Constructivism. Printmaking and its history of use as a way to disseminate visual documents to a mass audience is integral to the making of my work. Rather than create a single painting, drawing, or sculpture, printmaking, specifically woodblock printing, allows me to create multiple original copies of the same image. This series was began as a way to return to the fundamental principles of creation and design: shape, color, line, composition. I start with a traditional subject matter throughout art history, the still life. From there I play with and explore visual problem solving strategies. I am interested in translation. Translation across media from drawing to collage to print to sculpture provide me with new conceptual and compositional questions that deserve exploration. During my project For Trade Only!, this series was used as an alternative form of currency to trade for items deemed of equal value between myself and the “buyer.”
